Choanal Atresia

  • Persistence of bucconasal membrane
  • Can be unilateral or bilateral
  • Presence of mucoid discharge in the nose
  • Absence of air bubbles in the nasal discharge
  • Failure to pass a catheter from nose to pharynx
  • Applying a few drops of a dye (methylene blue) into the nose and assess its passage into the pharynx
  • Flexible nasal endoscopy
  • Installing radio-opaque dye into the nose and taking a lateral film
  • CT scan
  • McGovern’s technique:  feeding nipple with large holes to make sure mouth breathing occurs
  • Removal of a part of posterior nasal septum transnasally
