  • Causative organism - C. diphtheriae(gram positive bacilli )
  • Droplet infection
  • Commonly affects children
  • Formation of greyish white membrane over tonsil 
  • Removal cuases bleeding
  • Bull neck appearance :enalrged JDG lymph nodes
  • ​​​​​​​Myocarditis, cardiac arrhythmias & acute circulatory failure
  • Paralysis of soft palate, diaphragm and ocular muscles
  • Airway obstruction

  • 20,000–40,000 units
    • if diphtheria in less than 48 h
    • or the membrane is confined to tonsils only
  • 80,000–120,000 units
    • if >48 h
    • or the membrane is more extensive.
  • Benzyl pencillin
  • Erythromycin in those sensitive to penicillin
