- Droplet infection
- Commonly affects children
- Formation of greyish white membrane over tonsil
- Removal cuases bleeding
- Bull neck appearance :enalrged JDG lymph nodes
- Myocarditis, cardiac arrhythmias & acute circulatory failure
- Paralysis of soft palate, diaphragm and ocular muscles
- Airway obstruction

- if diphtheria in less than 48 h
- or the membrane is confined to tonsils only
- 80,000–120,000 units
- if >48 h
- or the membrane is more extensive.
- Benzyl pencillin
- Erythromycin in those sensitive to penicillin
