Rhinosporidiosis

  • Chronic granulomatous disease              
  • Causative organism 
    • Rhinosporidium seeberi
  • More common in  India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan
  • More common in north India
  • Disease also affects animals like cows, bulls, horses etc ​​​​​​​
  • Mostly it affects nose and nasopharynx
  • Other sites
    • lip, palate
    • Conjunctiva
    • Epiglottis,larynx
    • Trachea,bronchi
  • Nose
    • Leafy, polypoidal mass
    • Pink to purple in colour                                                       
    • Studded with white dots
    • aka strawberry mass
  •   Mass bleeds on touch
  • Biopsy
    • Sporangia filled with spores
  • Complete excision with diathermy knife                                        
    • with cauterization of its base
  • Dapsone has been tried with some success

  • Divides and forms small endospores
  • Mature trophocytedevelops into sporangium
  • It has a thick wall consisting of 2 layers
    • Outer chitinous
    • Inner cellulose layer.
  • Pressure inside sporangia builds up
  • Ruptures and releases endospores
