G6PD Deficiency

- RBCs are prone to Free radical(H2O2) damage since they carry O2
- Reduced Glutathione is essential for neutralising Free radicals
- Reduced Glutathione generation is dependent on NADPH/G6PD, produced by HMP shunt pathway
- In the absence of G6PD, oxidative stress can cause hemolysis
Agents that can precipitate hemolysis
- Aspirin
- Quinine and other anti-malarials
- Sulpha drugs
- Fava Beans
- X-linked recessive
- Females Carriers have a biological advantage - resistance to Malarial infection
