G6PD Deficiency

G6PD Deficiency

  • RBCs are prone to Free radical(H2O2) damage since they carry O2
  • Reduced Glutathione is essential for neutralising Free radicals
  • Reduced Glutathione generation is dependent on NADPH/G6PD, produced by HMP shunt pathway
  • In the absence of G6PD, oxidative stress can cause hemolysis

Agents that can precipitate hemolysis

  • Aspirin
  • Quinine and other anti-malarials
  • Sulpha drugs
  • Fava Beans
  • X-linked recessive
  • Females Carriers have a biological advantage - resistance to Malarial infection
