Liver Biomarkers

  • Normal value
    •  13-35U/L in males
    • 10-30U/L in females
  • In liver diseases ALT increased more than AST
  • Acute hepatitis – 300-1000 U/L
  • Chronic Liver diseases ( Cirrhosis, Hep C, Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis)– 50-100 U/L
  • Normal → 40-125 U/L
  • Moderate ↑ – Hepatic diseases (infective hepatitis, hepatocellular carcinoma)
  • Very high ↑ (10-12 times) –Extrahepatic obstruction (d/t gallstones or CA of head of pancreas)
  • Drastic ↑ (10-25 times) – Bone diseases like Paget's, Rickets ,Osteomalacia ,etc.
  • 5’ nucleotidase enzyme, Normal value → 2-10 U/L
  • Moderate ↑ - Hepatitis
  • Highly elevated – Biliary obstruction
  • Enzyme used for synthesis of glutathione
  • Normal value → 10-30 U/L
  • Moderate ↑ – Infective hepatitis and prostate cancer
  • Used to detect alcohol abuse
